The impact of Islam on societies where it is dominant is shown in Algeria where the government systematically works to eliminate Christianity and shield Islam from accountability.

According to religious liberty analyst Elizabeth Kendal, persecution is escalating in Algeria due to the government’s pragmatic and cowardly stance toward Islam. In the last few months this increasing repression has taken the form of the Algerian government’s seizure of several churches, the arbitrary arrests and sentencing of Christians, and the offer of sanctuary for known Islamic terrorists.

Recent examples of the uptick in the Algerian government’s directives to stifle Christianity include the demanded closure of several churches, two Bible schools, a Christian-owned bookshop and a day-care center for Christian children. The actions were taken by Algerian authorities who formed a committee last November to investigate Christian activities.

This coordinated effort by the Algerian government to suppress Christianity comes a year before the next presidential election will take place and Kendal finds that this may likely be an attempt by the ruling party to demonstrate its loyalty to Islamic roots.

An answer to prayer, however: Slimane Bouhafs, a Christian imprisoned since 2016 for “insulting Islam” through his Facebook account, was released on Easter Sunday this year!
